Gamescom 2026: What the world’s biggest gaming event tells us about the games industry

Events & Trade Shows, Insights, Strategic Advisory & Market Intelligence

Back from Cologne after another packed gamescom, we look back at gamescom 2026, the continued international growth of the event and a week spent meeting people from across the global games industry

Another gamescom is in the books. For Games Branding, Cologne has been part of the calendar for many years. But gamescom 2026 once again demonstrated just how international the games industry has become.

Across a very busy few days, we met game developers, publishers, gaming hardware companies, creators, media and industry partners from around the world, reconnecting with familiar faces while starting plenty of new conversations.

The scale of gamescom continues to grow. gamescom 2026 welcomed 368,000 visitors from 131 countries, including more than 36,000 trade visitors.
A record 1,743 companies from 66 countries exhibited at the show, with international companies accounting for 72% of exhibitors.

Those are enormous numbers. But walking the halls in Cologne, the more interesting story wasn’t simply how big gamescom has become. It was how global the business of games now is.

A global games industry under one roof
Few events bring together so many different parts of the international games
industry in one place.

Major publishers share the show floor with independent developers, emerging
studios, hardware and technology companies, creators, media and businesses
from markets across Europe, Asia, North America and beyond.

For a few days in Cologne, an industry normally spread across continents and
time zones suddenly feels remarkably close together.

And for an industry that spends much of the year communicating through
screens, gamescom remains an important reminder of the value of meeting
face-to-face.Sometimes a 20-minute conversation in Cologne can accomplish
more than months of emails.

A challenging industry, but not one standing still
It would be difficult to talk about the state of the games industry in 2026 without
acknowledging that the sector has been through a challenging period.

Budgets are under pressure, competition is intense and standing out in an
increasingly crowded global market remains a challenge for companies of
every size.

But Cologne didn’t feel like an industry retreating. Quite the opposite.

Throughout the week, the halls were filled with new games, new technology, new companies and people arriving from around the world to meet, reconnect and look towards what comes next.

The atmosphere reminded us that even during periods of change, this remains an extraordinarily creative and ambitious global industry.

The international side of gamescom
One of the things we have always enjoyed about gamescom is its international
character.

A single day can take you through conversations with people from completely
different parts of the world, different areas of the industry and companies at
very different stages of their journey.

Taking place virtually from 15 October to 15 November 2026, Zoud GameLab will bring together developers, designers, artists, writers and other creators from around the world to turn financial concepts and everyday money decisions into engaging gameplay. Ahead of the jam, a pre-jam learning programme will begin on 15 September, with resources and expert-led sessions to help participants explore the theme and develop their ideas.

Zoud GameLab brings together Zoud’s mandate to advance financial wellbeing with Global Game Jam’s expertise and global game development community, with the aim of creating new and creative ways to engage people with financial concepts through games.

“At Zoud, we are always looking for new and creative ways to make financial wellbeing more accessible and engaging. Through Zoud GameLab, we are tapping into the creativity of game creators around the world to explore how financial concepts can be brought to life through play. We also hope to see strong participation from developers across the UAE and the region, bringing local perspectives to the games and ideas that emerge” said Natalia El Menhall, Program Director at Zoud.

Global Game Jam welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with Zoud on the initiative.

“Game jams are the perfect vehicle to engage developers in tackling complex, real-world topics in creative ways,” said Maria Burns Ortiz, Executive Director of Global Game Jam. “Financial literacy is exactly the kind of challenge that can push jammers to think differently about both design and impact.”

A Global, Fully Virtual Jam

Zoud GameLab is open to participants worldwide, making it possible for game creators to take part regardless of location.

During the month-long jam, participants will be able to form teams, develop their concepts and submit their games. The jam is open to creators of all levels and backgrounds, including studios, whether they have experience developing educational games or are completely new to the topic of financial literacy.

Participants will be challenged to integrate financial literacy meaningfully into their games, with this forming part of the judging criteria. Those competing for the top awards will also be required to submit a project budget, putting their own financial planning skills into practice as part of the challenge.

Rewarding the Best Games

Zoud GameLab will recognise the strongest entries across a range of award categories, with funding and prizes awarded across the best overall game, runner-up and third place, alongside additional awards recognising games that effectively contribute to financial literacy, bring regional perspectives and deliver compelling gameplay. The jam will have a shared prize and funding pool of up to $140,000 USD.

Resources and Learning Opportunities

Participants will have access to a range of financial literacy and game development resources to help them explore the theme and strengthen their ideas. • Drop-in office hours and/or one-to-one sessions with subject matter experts throughout the jam

Sustainable Games Alliance Launches First Industry Standard for Sustainable Games

Events & Trade Shows, Insights

Helsinki, Finland – The Sustainable Games Alliance (SGA), a global non-profit cooperative of game developers, universities and associations, today announced the launch of the Sustainable Games Standard, the first global emissions reporting framework created specifically for the games industry.

Established in 2024, SGA set out to bring studios, publishers, associations, and partners together around a common goal: making gaming the most sustainable form of entertainment. Just a year later, that goal has moved from vision to reality. With more than 30 members and partners already involved, the Sustainable Games Standard gives the industry a freely available, practical tool to measure, benchmark, and reduce emissions across development, publishing, distribution, and infrastructure.

“With the Sustainable Games Standard, the industry finally has a framework that reflects how games are actually made, turning ambition into actionable impact. It is a commitment of the industry uniting companies, associations, and researchers under one standard to drive change at scale. Our ambition is to make gaming the most sustainable entertainment medium, and industry wide strategic action based on easily accessible and comparable data is the only way we’ll get there.” said Maria Wagner, Managing Director of the Sustainable Games Alliance.

A Framework Designed for Games

Unlike generic reporting tools, the Sustainable Games Standard has been built around the unique needs of the games sector and its value chain. Covering everything from game design and server infrastructure to marketing and hardware, the framework enables companies to:

  • Track emissions with accuracy specific to games

  • Benchmark performance across titles and companies

  • Identify improvements that cut costs and reduce environmental impact

  • Comply with new regulations in Europe and beyond

  • Optimize energy consumption and extend battery life

  • Reduce hardware load and optimize performance

  • Enhance the player experience

Importantly, the framework is freely available, ensuring studios of all sizes, from AAA to indie, can take part.

Global Industry Support

The Sustainable Games Alliance already unites a broad coalition of studios, publishers, service providers, and associations. Together, these organizations represent every corner of the industry, from pioneering indie developers and global studios to trade associations and research initiatives, reflecting a growing momentum for systemic, industry-wide action on sustainability.

“The SGA Standard paves the way for greater transparency and streamlined collaboration between game developers, manufacturers, and service providers to more effectively contribute to emissions reduction,” said Mathias Gredal Nørvig, CEO of SYBO. “An industry standard for measurement and reporting is the critical next step in making the gaming landscape’s sustainability efforts more efficient and impactful.”

“To accurately measure our company’s full carbon footprint, we need transparent data from our partners. While we get detailed emissions reporting for some services like business travel, there are major data gaps when it comes to digital service infrastructure. This prevents us from truly understanding our impact. Standardized reporting for services is essential—it would empower customers and providers alike to make meaningful climate progress. That’s why I’m excited to see what we can achieve with the SGA Standard,” said Tommi Lappalainen, Senior Sustainability Manager at Rovio Entertainment.

“Energy efficiency is not just a technical detail, it’s a competitive advantage. Longer battery life keeps players engaged on the go, while lower energy demand contributes to a more sustainable game industry. To make real progress, we need reliable ways to measure and compare performance across the industry, and it is exciting to see SGA being a leader of that transformation”, said Laurent Gibert, Principal Product Strategy Architect & Co-Lead Unity Montreal.

From Launch to Action
The launch of the Sustainable Games Standard marks the beginning of a new chapter for the industry, one where environmental responsibility becomes part of how games are made. It is paving the way for more strategic and systemic reporting and emissions reduction by enabling integration into game engines, platforms, and by service providers, saving developers time and money by delivering better data, faster and with greater transparency freeing up capacities for studios to focus on creating more sustainable, just better games.

Throughout 2025 and 2026, the Sustainable Games Alliance (SGA) will support adoption of the standard and will host workshops, case studies, and presentations that showcase results from early members and demonstrate real-world impact.

SGA is calling on developers, publishers, platforms, investors, and associations worldwide to join the initiative and help position gaming as a global leader in sustainable entertainment.

We went to the VGS2024 !

Events & Trade Shows, Insights, Videogames

Caracas, Venezuela – We were blessed with the opportunity of going to the Venezuelan Games Show 2024, which is the largest gaming and tech event in Venezuela and one of the largest in LATAM. We sent our tech guy, Roger Guerrero, over there to be hands on this amazing experience, full of flair, charisma, beauty and of course, loads of gaming !

Watch here some of the impressions from the floor.

We had the opportunity to interview none other than Diego Hurtado, who is an uprising Venezuelan influencer that has amassed an audience of over 500.000 followers between all his channels, consisting of mostly young people who are interested in comedy and trending stuff.

Watch a small subtitled Diego Hurtado interview here.

The interview was full of humor and looked back at the times where brands like Sony, Nintendo and Nvidia presented their products on launch in Venezuela. The dire wish of having them all back in a bold Venezuelan market is profound.

We also had the chance to chat with several attendees and get their thoughts on the Venezuelan Games Show 2024. One of them was Capital Boar Gaming, which were also one of the sponsors and event organizers themselves.

“Events have grown. The world of geeks and nerds is now more present, and people perceive hobbies and entertainment as valuable; traditional brands in Venezuela have embraced this, not as a fad but as a form of artistic representation. Seeing this last event’s number of participants and visitors has been inspiring.”

“The hobby of wargaming is gathering more and more interest than ever. We need to continue to create, maintain and grow communities, while embracing both new and seasoned players. We see that the number of members and enthusiasts keeps growing…”
— Capital Boar Gaming

The amazing Ayzel-Chan crossed our path, too. We managed to get a few words from her. She was representing the E-Sports team and event creator: Streamer Arena.

“In this edition of Venezuelan Games Show 2024 the cosplayers were amazing, I reconnected with friends, took part in the cosplay contest, and also attended all the E-Sports tournaments.”

“I hosted the Counter-Strike tournament and also followed the Valorant tournament closely. A tournament which Streamer Arena won. This showed me that we really do have a lot of talent in Venezuela.”
— Alejandra Lopez (Ayzel-Chan)

We also came along Droxette wich was attending the event individually, and was able to give us her point of view of the event as a experienced cosplay artist

“The Venezuela Game Show was an incredible event. It’s amazing the amount of activities you can do, whether it’s playing games, enjoying tournaments, or appreciating the stage shows.

As a cosplayer, I appreciate the space they’ve given to the community, as the event held 3 cosplay contests for this edition.”
— Sullivan Sanchez (Droxette)

In summary, Venezuela is a rapidly expanding market, with major brands like Doritos, Rexona, Red Dragon, Oreo, and PEPSI making a strong presence as sponsors for events like the Venezuelan Game Show 2024. With large E-Sports tournaments offering up to $40,000 in prize pools, this upcoming scene is proving its relevance beyond gaming, impacting the entire tech industry. We are happy to see forward thinking events like these secure the future demand for peripherals, high-end hardware, apparel, and more.

Thank you for your attention, and we look forward to next time!

Ukraine Pavilion at Gamescom 2024: New Horizons of the Industry

Community Management, Events & Trade Shows, Insights

At this year’s Gamescom, the Ukraine pavilion once again impressed the world by bringing together game development studios, event organizers, service companies, and innovative startups. Ukraine showcased its achievements in the gaming industry and its creative and business potential.

  • “The Ukraine pavilion at Gamescom has become a key destination for both Ukrainian studios and developers, as well as international partners. Its main goal was to become a convenient space for meetings and business networking, and it worked 100%! While the global gaming industry is still recovering from the crisis, we saw signs of optimism among the participants. I hope that next year we’ll make the pavilion even larger and showcase more amazing projects from Ukraine,” shared Oleg Yavorsky,
  • Development Director of VG Entertainment and co-organizer of the pavilion

.

Alongside business meetings, there was a charity auction to support our country:

  • “It has become a great tradition to bring together our industry friends and supporters of Ukraine at the annual networking reception and charity auction during Gamescom. I’m delighted to see that the interest in this event and the generosity of our community is not declining over the years, but otherwise, increasing. This time we were able to gather the record amount of EUR 20500 for Gamedev Under Bombs and I’m immensely grateful for that!” said Olena Lobova, co-founder and CBDO of GDBAY, and co-organizer of the pavilion

.

Pavilion participants noted that the conference was a valuable platform for forging new contacts and partnerships:

  • “Participating in the Ukrainian pavilion at Gamescom 2024 was an incredible experience. Despite the immense challenges we face, from the ongoing war to industry-wide crises, this event was a much-needed breath of fresh air. It was inspiring to see the global community engage with our project, which we believe brings something new and exciting to the genre. The resilience and creativity of the Ukrainian gaming industry were on full display, and I left feeling more connected and motivated to continue pushing boundaries. We’re eager to build on the relationships we’ve formed and look forward to future collaborations!” said Mike from Hologryph.
  • Maksym from WMG International added: “Everything was great. On behalf of the entire team, I want to highlight the convenient location and the functionality of the space, which had several areas for meetings. Our partners also appreciated the design.”

  • “The event was great and really fruitful in terms of business. Having our own Ukrainian booth helped a lot in organizing meetings in one area and also allowed us to exchange a lot of experiences between the teams present there. Thanks to the organizers, everything went smoothly; our company enjoyed being part of the event and the Ukraine booth,” also highlighted Olga from PlayToMax.

  • “After the tradeshow, our team did an after-action review and realized there were some areas that we could have prepared better. Still, we’re thrilled with the outcomes. We drew significant interest from companies whose games we personally love and play.
Meeting representatives from various country pavilions was particularly valuable. They are usually set up by government funds or business associations that actively support their participants and help with networking. They often provide funding programs for companies willing to incorporate or relocate, and they offer assistance with that as well,” said Vyacheslav from QPM.

For more details about the history of the Ukraine pavilion, the list of participants, as well as photos from Gamescom 2024 and the charity auction, please visit the official website: www.gamesukraine.com.
